Why? | | Well as some of you who may or may not have played around with PHPbb 2's template's system, its one of the easiest to work with on the planet. It puts SMF, IBP, and Vbulletin to shame. So I figure that their version 3 template's system should really only be better.
I have never been more wrong. Granted the default skin looks wonderful, but god so help you if you should want to change that default look. It suffers from what I would like to call: "To complex to reverse syndrome" In which the core coding (which looks wonderful by the way, an almost entirely div based forum system, with highlights and thousands of other nifty features) becomes so scrambled and confused for the end user, that to change it would throw the whole system into utter chaos.
The real problem lies in the nearly 15 different stylesheets, and half a dozen or so ID's that have no entry into those stylesheets. So you have to go through every class and ID and figure out what is causing what. When there are 15, this can drive you through a wall. Its almost enough to make me appreciate SMF's severely convoluted Template system. Granted there was no central image base, but at least the php made sense. PHPbb's new system throws in some odd mix of HTML / PHP / CSS all in the same file (worked out well in the last set, now its just convoluted)
Anyway long rant short, after I get done with that, I'm looking at having to rewrite Joomla 1.5 and then finally once that is done I can start trying to fuse PHPbb 3 & Joomla into one finished product. What happened to the old days of webdesign when a CSS stylesheet wasn't required. And 7 days of code rewrites weren't need because IE 5 was the only thing on the market. | | Back to Top - Link to Post |
